This session of Vidyapith Praktani Adda, an educational bi-monthly session, was held on March 7, 2021, on the need for intellectual property rights. The speaker shared his expertise in the field of IPRs with the Praktani and dealt with several critical aspects of the IPR ecosystem. 

The session moderated by Ritesh Chaturvedi 1995 alumni of Ramakrishna Mission Vidyapith, Deoghar acquainted us with the speaker’s experience as a registered patent agent with the Government of India and his working in this area with reputed institutions such as the IITs and the NITs. 

The session also dealt with the very idea of IPRs to forge a sense of familiarity with the topic among the participants. It went on to analyze the reasons as to why IPRs are necessary and how the whole process of filing an IPR application happens. 

In addition, the session also pointed out the different kinds of IPRs depending on their scope and viability. It went on to talk about the IPRs in the field of technology in particular and how they are an ever-evolving field with new forms of innovation happening regularly. He also shared his experience of dealing with specific institutions which seek to file patents in this field. 

The session explored the scope and importance of patents coming specifically from educational institutions and impacting the IPR ecosystem. Further, the speaker unpacked the necessary criteria for filing a patent and the essential elements of the eventual success or the failure of a patent application. 

It also dealt with how these patents impact innovation and create a path towards progress in these specific fields. The concluding remarks of the talk explored a tool called PATEOMATIC, an automated tool for drafting patents.

About the Speaker:

Rajarshi Dasgupta RKMV’2001, is a patent attorney with an engineering degree in Biotechnology. He completed a bachelor’s in Law specializing in intellectual property rights from IIT Kharagpur (2011). He is a registered patent agent under the Government of India and has extensively contributed to developing the entire patent portfolio of indigenous vaccine manufacturer Bharat Biotech International Limited. He takes a keen interest in patenting new ideas for the academic sector and has filed patents on premier technical institutes.
