Future of Medicine: The Good and the Ugly

Dr. Sanjoy Mandal (Class of 1989)

Dr. Sanjoy Mandal gave a very important presentation on the future of medicine and discussed the new contours evolving in the field of medicine in great detail. Practising as a gastrointestinal surgeon, Dr. Mandal brought years of his expertise and insights into the presentation in order to widen our horizons and show the newer perspectives when it comes to medicine.

In his presentation, he talked about the advances in the technical as well as the instrumental aspects of surgery over time and what is in store for the future. He laid great focus on the ways in which the field of medicine has advanced in order to make surgeries more efficient. He traced the trajectory of various surgeries from the traditional to the modern methods in his presentation. Despite the fact that his presentation was laden with a number of medical jargons, he took time to explain them for the participants who did not have a medical background. He explored aspects such as Single incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) and Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES) in his presentation. He went on to talk about the recent news of a pig heart being surgically planted in a human and what it meant for the field of medicine. He also explored in depth the nuances of In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF). In addition to that, the presentation dealt with themes related to the role of Artificial Intelligence in Medicine and how it is broadening the contours of medicine as a field of inquiry.

It was a fascinating presentation which was thoroughly enjoyed by the participants. A number of questions were asked which the speaker answered with a lot of enthusiasm. The talk ended with a vote of thanks to the speaker on behalf of the praktani.
