Impact of Diagnostic Laboratories in Health & Disease

Dr. Bhaskar Bhattacharya (RKMV 1988 Batch)

In a thought-provoking Praktani Adda held on August 12, 2023, Dr. Bhaskar Bhattacharya, a distinguished alumnus of RKMV from the class of 1988, delivered a captivating address on Impact of Diagnostic Laboratories in Health & Disease.

Dr Bhattacharya began by briefly explaining function and uses of diagnostic labs. He then explained various criteria which if followed can help people find a good and credible diagnostic center specially in India where only 4000 laboratories out of approx. 2 Lakhs diagnostic laboratories are accredited.

He talked in detail about the expectations of patients from diagnostic labs, like the expected timeline for service delivery, the test result format, standard operating procedure followed, patient preparation etc

He then moved on to accreditation, NABL(National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories), ISO standards and explained why one should check report authenticity using QR code.

Further he explained mistakes and error handling in lab reports, sampling error and minimizing error using bar codes. He also explained the responsibilities of lab director and rights of patients. He emphasized that that certain rights must be ensured by an accredited lab in India and therefore every patient should know those rights.

Finally, he beautifully explained the responsibilities of a patient and why one should follow them. The floor was then opened for a Q & A session.
