Beyond Engineering and Medical: Career Opportunities in Economics

The 31st session of the Praktani Adda addresses a dilemma many students face when deciding on a career path. The trend, particularly among students graduating from tier 2 cities, is to pursue Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects.

Satyam, Manager in the Department of Economic and Policy Research at the Reserve Bank of India, led the Praktani Adda Session. He received his B.A(H) in Economics from the University of Delhi's Shri Ram College of Commerce and his M.A from the Delhi School of Economics.

He secured AIR 18 in UGC-NET JRF and ranked 13th in the 64th Bihar Public Service Commission examination. Satyam also runs a Cancer Awareness Campaign in memory of his mother.

In the Adda, Satyam talks about the lack of interest among students in pursuing Economics as a subject in higher studies and making a career out of it. Before conducting the Adda, the speaker, known for his due diligence among his batchmates, surveyed to get acquainted with the nuances to understand why many students opt out of taking Economics as a choice of higher studies, despite having an interest in the subject.

During the Adda, the speaker addressed the dilemma students face when deciding whether to pursue courses such as Engineering, Medicine, and Chartered Accountancy or less famous but equally enriching career paths.

Satyam expertly explains the various career opportunities that can be obtained by studying Economics, the scope of the subject, and its relevance in today's world. The session provides a brief overview of various career paths and avenues that an economics student can pursue after pursuing it at multiple levels. The session will assist students and their parents make a more informed decision by weighing the options mentioned during the Adda.
